The GRAS Instrument

The GRAS instrument (Global navigation satellite systems Receiver for Atmospheric Sounding) is a GPS receiver. It is a new instrument being developed by the instrument prime Saab Ericsson Space in Sweden, under contract to ESA/Eumetsat. The GRAS provides a minimum of 500 atmospheric profiles per day by a process of GPS radio occultation. Gras will provide atmospheric soundings of the temperature and humidity of the Earth atmosphere. In addition GRAS will provide navigation solutions of the MetOp satellite position along its orbit. These profiles will be assimilated into Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models.
